The Heartless.
History: The Heartless were first born from darkness by Xehanort and his fellow apprentices. Xehanort was himself an apprentice of Ansem the Wise, who researched various effects on the human heart. Eventually, Xehanort would himself become a Heartless, taking his former master's name and fighting the Heroes of Light in their first journey against the darkness. The Heartless themselves have constantly fought against those who serve the power of light, and also been under the control of those who had enough power to control them.
Three times, this has been the witch Maleficent. Firstly, she controlled them whilst trying to lead a series of villains in controlling the Heartless themselves. Secondly, she took some control (perhaps the least during her career) over the Heartless during the First War between herself, the Heroes of Light and Organization XIII. Finally, she took what appears to be permanent control of the Heartless during her time in the World That Never Was, prior to the Second War.
Description: Heartless once came in many different varieties, although now only a fraction of this amount remain. The Heartless are, however, divided into two distinct groups:
In terms of appearance, Heartless never look similar, though they are always dark colours. They once adapted to fit their surroundings, though not they are more likely to appear otherworldly. Heartless can often be seen emerging through their means of travel, the Corridors of Darkness, which connect the world together. Very few people have walked these corridors, and so few can comment on their appearance or full purpose.
Varieties: Once greater in numbers, the Heartless have been reduced to only eight varieties, or 'breeds', both Emblem and Pureblood. However, few care to note which are which.
Combat: Heartless attack with mob-like tactics; hoping to overwhelm their foes. However, this means they are disorganised, and unlikely to make tactically sound decisions. They concentrate on single foes, relentlessly attacking them until they fall.
Allegiance to Maleficent's Heartless: Members of Maleficent's Heartless gain the ability to summon a small amount of Heartless to their side, in their attempts to corrupt the free peoples of the worlds. They may summon a maximum of
Once these Heartless have been destroyed, they are on their own for the rest of the fight. Many choose to summon their most powerful Heartless to engage the enemy, as well as a small number of minor Heartless, and use their remaining minor Heartless to cover their escape.

Description: Heartless once came in many different varieties, although now only a fraction of this amount remain. The Heartless are, however, divided into two distinct groups:
- Pureblood Heartless: These are natural creatures, born of pure darkness. They are distinct in their colourings, being blacker than their Emblem counterparts, and with bright yellow eyes. The vast majority of Shadow Heartless are Pureblood Heartless.
- Emblem Heartless: Emblem Heartless were created in laboratories by those eager to use the darkness. They are recognizable by the heart symbol they bear somewhere on their bodies. Many of the different varieties are, and were, Emblem Heartless, and yet the Pureblood Shadow Heartless still outnumber them.

- Air Pirate: One of only three remaining Heartless breeds capably of flight (the other two being the Nightwalker and the Rapid Thruster). The Air Pirates left their home of Never Land and now pollute new worlds. Whilst they do not carry weapons, they pack a dangerous punch.
Populated Worlds: Beast's Castle, Disney Castle, Port Royal, The World The Never Was, Twilight Town. - Lance Soldier: Lance Soldiers Heartless are heavily-armoured warriors, unsurprisingly favouring the lance as a weapon. They like to charge into their enemies, putting their favoured weapon to devastating effect.
Populated Worlds: Beast's Castle, Radiant Garden, Traverse Town, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Luna Bandit: Dressed in full-eastern attire, the Luna Bandit carries a pair of razor-sharp scimitars, which it likes to spin to catch the opponent offguard. It is always best to keep defensive when fighting the Luna Bandit.
Populated Worlds: Agrabah, Radiant Garden, Traverse Town, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Morning Star: Morning Star is a large, spiked, metal Heartless, fearless in its attack. It will often leap at its foes from nowhere, slamming its full weight into them. It is attacks, it is best to move.
Populated Worlds: Disney Castle, Port Royal, Traverse Town, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Nightwalker: Nimble, Nightwalkers use magic to attack. Like the Air Pirate, it does not carry a weapon, but instead flies to avoid combat. Even the most agile of heroes must leap into the air to take it down.
Populated Worlds: Agrabah, Disney Castle, Traverse Town, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Rapid Thruster: Rapid Thrusters have an annoying habit of attacking in groups. Buzzing round their opponent' head, they try to cause confusion before headbutting into the foe. Whilst they resemble bees, they actually have no stinger - little consolation.
Populated Worlds: Agrabah, Beast's Castle, Port Royal, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Shadow Heartless: The most numerous of all the Heartless, the Shadow Heartless appear from the ground, attacking from the Corridors of Darkness and catching their foes offguard. They can also melt into the ground, drawing combat out more than it probably should. On top of this, they, like the Rapid Thruster, attack in groups, often alongside the Soldier Heartless.
Populated Worlds: Agrabah, Beast's Castle, Disney Castle, Port Royal, Radiant Garden, Traverse Town, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town. - Soldier Heartless: Only slightly less in numbers than the Shadow Heartless, the Soldier Heartless is the weakest of the remaining breeds. They run around the battlefield almost aimlessly, charging into anything that is not Heartless.

Allegiance to Maleficent's Heartless: Members of Maleficent's Heartless gain the ability to summon a small amount of Heartless to their side, in their attempts to corrupt the free peoples of the worlds. They may summon a maximum of
- Six Shadow Heartless
- Six Soldier Heartless
- Four Heartless of their choice, chosen when applying to join.
Once these Heartless have been destroyed, they are on their own for the rest of the fight. Many choose to summon their most powerful Heartless to engage the enemy, as well as a small number of minor Heartless, and use their remaining minor Heartless to cover their escape.
